Traditionally, security has meant freedom from military attack and has been synonymous with national security. In addition, a state could enter into alliances that provided collective security. More recently, the concept has expanded to include environmental and economic concerns. And the term human security has been used to emphasize the need to focus on the needs of the individual, including freedom from fear and freedom from want, as well as specific needs such as food security.
